Dr. R. S. Paroda is the most decorated personality to be honoured at the Mahindra Samriddhi India Agri Awards 2013. Over the years, he has put in his heart and soul into strengthening the national agricultural research system in India, Central Asia and the Caucasus. And in helping establish the Asia Pacific Seed Association and the Asia Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions. He was instrumental in setting up three of the largest and most modern national gene banks in the world.
In the past, he held several important positions like Chairman, Governing Board of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT); Member, Policy Advisory Council of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR); Secretary, Government of India in the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE); and Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
Under his leadership the ICAR and DARE have attained new heights through infrastructure expansion and long-term programme and policy formulation. He has also chaired the Global Forum on Agricultural Research from 1998 to 2001. And had a global role in the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research that contributed immensely to the prosperity of farmers and the development of agriculture.
He has received numerous awards for his unparalleled contributions to agriculture – the ‘Padma Bhushan’ presented by President of India; ‘Outstanding Research Partner’ award, presented by ICRISAT; and the ‘Norman E. Borlaug’ award.

With 17 years of experience in agriculture, Moti Singh Rawat introduced an innovation unlike any in his field. He used the poly-house artificial atmosphere control method for growing off-season vegetables like hybrid capsicum and tomatoes. He also made his own bio-insecticides, pesticides and equipped his farms with a mobile phone-operated drip irrigation technology.
He was also the first farmer in Rajasthan to be recognised by the state government for using a poly-house technique for growing vegetables.
His innovations saw him develop good relations with agri-experts, agri-universities and scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras. In recognition of his efforts, many awards and certificates of honour from the state governments and authorities have been presented to him like the 'Best Practices in Agriculture Award' by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the 'Green House Management Certificate' by International Horticulture Innovation & Training Centre (Jaipur), and the 'Excellent Farmers Award' by Haldar Times.

With 23 years of agricultural expertise under his belt, Arvindbhai Bhagwanbhai Patel made a significant impact in the field. He used solar operated knapsack sprayers and solar operated submersible pumps as part of his cultivation process. As a result, he saw a 600 kg/acre increase in farm produce. And the decrease in labour charges and electricity spends brought the cost of cultivation down by Rs 4845/acre. For his efforts, he has received accolades like the 'Indian Innovative Initiative – 2013 Award', presented by CII & Department of Science and Technology, Government of India; the 'Best ATMA Farmer Award – 2009/10', presented by ATMA, Gandhinagar; the 'Sardar Patel Agriculture Research Award – 2011/12', presented by Department of Agriculture, Government of Gujarat; and a letter of appreciation from IDWJ & Department of Agriculture.

Karnataka's Rudrappa Zulapi has been farming for 17 years. He has used all his agricultural knowledge to come up with the wide row, single eye bud system, and organic farming techniques to improve his crops. He also recycled farm wastes in his field to increase soil fertility. As a result, he saw his farm output increase by 25000 kg/acre and costs of cultivation reduce to Rs 3000/acre from Rs 15,000/acre due to decrease in labour costs and spends on seeds. He has received several awards like the 'State Award for Organic Farming – 2005', presented by Sri Annadaneshawara Sansthanamata, Halakere; 'Certificate for Organic Farming- 2011', presented by University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot; and the 'KrishiPandit Award – Feb 2012', presented by Karnataka State Government.

Tapan Nandi used his 30 years of agricultural experience to produce great results by cultivating scented Paddy through the SRI (System of Rice Intensification) method, a unique case in West Bengal. As a result, he achieved a 580 kg/acre increase in his farm produce. Cost of cultivation reduced to Rs 7,800/ acre from Rs 10,500/acre due to decrease in spends on seeds, insecticides and pesticides. Water required for irrigation through SRI was 40% less. His efforts have seen him feature in an article published by Rural Banker, SBIRD, Hyderabad. He was also sent a letter of appreciation (organic farming) by Prof. M.S. Swaminathan and NABARD, Kolkatta; a letter of recognition (organic farming) by KVK, Burdwan, West Bengal; and an invitation letter for radio telecast by Doordarshan Kendra, Kolkata.

R. Sakthivel's 17 years of hard work in agriculture culminated into a National Award at the Mahindra Samriddhi India Agri Awards 2013. He designed and implemented an extracting system, which helped him boost his Sugarcane production by 13000 kg/acre. A concept he presented at the 6th national level K.V.K conference, Jabalpur.
His system works as a four-part process –first, cow dung and urine are collected and mixed thoroughly. This solution is then filtered through to a second compartment, where solid and liquid matter is separated. The solid is then used for biogas production, while the liquid moves into the third chamber. Here, jaggery is added to the mix to ferment it. The final step of the process involves adding water and releasing the nutrient rich extract into the field via drip irrigation.

With close to four decades of know-how in agriculture, Chaturbhai Bhagvanbhai Gedia came up with an ingenious idea to enhance his yield. He used drip irrigation in Cotton crops and invented a multi-purpose implement that can be attached to a tractor and used for preparing land as well as perform intercultural operations. These operations include tillage, ridge making, two-time weeding and fertiliser drilling, which can all be performed by the same implement. As a result, productivity rose by 290 kg/acre. Less consumption of fuel and low labour costs led to fall in cost of cultivation by 2041/acre. He has also been felicitated with awards like the 'Krishi Na Rashi Award – 2012', presented by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi; the 'Sardar Vallabhai Patel Puruskar- 2012', presented by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi; the 'Best ATMA Farmers Award – 2010/11', presented by IDWG & Department of Agriculture, Government of Gujarat; and the 'Best ATMA Farmers Award – 2011/12', presented by Gujarat Agriculture Minister Shri. He has featured in articles in Haldar Times, Rajasthan Patrka and CITA. Recently he participated in 'Jugaad Promotion Exhibition & Patent Facilitation Workshop- 2012', held by Pacific Academy of Higher Education and Research University, and a radio program by Doordarshan sharing agri related knowledge. His efforts have also won him awards such as the 'Progressive Farmer Award', presented by Indian Agriculture Research Institute, New Delhi; and the 'Advance Horticulture Management Certificate', presented by International Horticulture Innovation and Training Centre, Jaipur.

P. Azhagar is probably one of the most experienced farmers in India today, with more than three and a half decades in agriculture. He is an active member of the 'Tamil Nadu Grassroots Innovations Association, Madurai', the 'Organic Farming Association of India' and the 'Government Horticulture College'. President, 'Tamil Nadu Organic Farm Movement'; special member, 'National Drumstick Research Center, TNAU, Coimbatore' and part of steering committee, 'Ozone Production Management Committee, Tamil Nadu'. He developed a new variety of drumstick by cross breeding several local varieties of the plant. Naming it 'Improved.
Pallapatti Alagarsamy Vellimalai Murugan (PAVM1)'. He has also developed air layering for vegetative propagation of the plant and an organic tonic using panchkavya, themoore, fish amino acid and microorganism as ingredients, which is used for treating flower drooping, increasing fruit growth and enhancing fruit shine.

Manjeet Singh Saluja has tried a lot of different things in his field over the past 26 years. One of his most famous innovations being integrated nutrient management and plastic mulching with atomised drip irrigation. As a result, he saw his farm produce grow by 44% and it was of a much better quality too. His harvest was on time, resulting in less wastage. He saved greatly on fertiliser cost due to mulching. His efforts have been appreciated at the 'Krishak Samman Samaroh' organised by Agriculture Department Rajandgaon. He has also been presented the 'Progressive Cultivation Practices in Chilli Award' by Spices Board of India, Cochin.

Cost of cultivation came down by Rs 3000/ acre. He saved Rs 1770/acre on labour cost. Water requirement for irrigation dropped 40%. He was able to earn an additional income of Rs 2400/acre. Sushila Gabel has come a long way in her 33 years in agriculture. She is the District President, Swarna Jayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojna & Ready to Eat Yojna, where she runs eight self-help groups comprising of 10-12 women each. She trains them in organic cultivation and food processing. She also sells vermi-compost to farmers and various other societies. With the help of K.V.K, Janjgir, she adopted SRI method of rice cultivation and use of bio pesticides in her farm.
She competed in Agri tech Krishi Mela organised by District Horticulture Department. Her efforts have also won her many accolades like the 'Harvest of Hope Award', presented by Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Government of India; the 'Mahila Prathiba Samman', presented by Lions Club, Janjgir; and the 'Krishak Samriddhi Samman', presented by Chattisgarh Rajya Mahila Ayog Committee.

As a result, she saw an increase of 400 kg/acre in her yields. Costs of cultivation dropped nearly 80% due to fall in labour and seed costs. The soil in her farm retained its fertility. Her article has featured in a publication on termite control, published by DFID. In a period of 5 years, he has already made a name for himself by innovating with the unusual mixed cropping pattern of Cotton and Watermelon and using silver black polythene mulch and drip irrigation system.

More than 20,000 farmers took her advice and benefitted. As a result, she saw her yield goes up by 450 kg/acre. Her cultivation cost dropped drastically. Her crop grew at a much faster pace than before.

Mallapa Sabu Bidari has only been in agriculture for 4 years and the awards are already pouring in. He has been practicing organic farming and conserving water used for irrigation through mulching. Lesser spends on pesticides and synthetic fertilisers have helped the costs of cultivation reduce. He made an additional income of Rs 2000/acre owing to intercropping with Cowpea.

Shivraj Saini took the effort of trying something new after using traditional methods of cultivation for nearly a decade. He experimented with the method of ratooning in Lady Finger. As a result, he saw his output double from 52,500 kg/acre to 1,31,250 kg/acre. He was able to sell the crop throughout the year, which helped him earn more during off-season.

CRRI, Cuttack developed a hybrid variety of Rice called CRDhan 701 for shallow lowlands of eastern India and for commercialisation of hybrid seed production. This variety is a cross between CRMS 31A and CRL22R through heterosis breeding, utilising the CGMS type of male sterility (3-line system of hybrid breeding).

They also developed Sahbhagidan, a drought and blast tolerant, semi-tall, early duration variety of rice for cultivation in rain fed drought prone areas. This is a result of a cross between IR55419-04*2/ way Rarem and IR55419-04 (drought tolerant donor).

As a result of applying Anubhav Liquid Fertilizer PGPB Consortium to the seed and soil at the time of sowing, and foliar spray of Anubhav Liquid Fertilizer PGPB Metabolite at 45DAS/ DATP, the shelf life of cereals have shown an increase. This resulted in a 25% drop in the cost of cultivation.

Farmers in eastern Rajasthan were finding it difficult to remain profitable. There was less income generated from farming owing to high soil salinity, while fewer returns from small landholdings led to migration of youth and unemployment. Bee keeping acted as an alternate source of income for the farmers. This was aided by cultivation of salt tolerant mustard crop, the flowers of which serve as a source of nectar for bees.
